Jackson McDermott

Biography

Jackson McDermott is the Cultural Places Officer for the Northwest Territories Cultural Places Program. He is Dene from the Dehcho region and Cree from northern Alberta. As the Cultural Places Officer, Mr. McDermott works with communities to preserve traditional place names and make them official, replacing the more recently derived Euro-Canadian geographic names. Mr. McDermott has experience working with the Fort Nelson First Nation in northwestern B.C. on ecological conservation and cultural heritage projects, some of which took place in the Rocky Mountains. He has a passion for Indigenous reclamation efforts of all types and understands the importance of bridging non-Indigenous institutions and Indigenous communities, and the impactful work that can be done when there is a respectful and reciprocal relationship.
